Health & Safety Policy — Gardener Blackfriars
Gardener Blackfriars is committed to maintaining a safe working environment for employees, clients and the public. This policy sets out principles and practical measures designed to manage hazards related to garden maintenance, landscaping and groundskeeping. The purpose is to provide clear direction to staff, contractors and anyone involved in our gardening operations so risks are managed proportionately and consistently across all sites where our Blackfriars gardening services operate.
Our approach is to integrate safety into every task, from mowing and pruning to tree work and chemical handling. We adopt proportionate controls, invest in training and ensure that protective equipment is provided and used. The policy applies to all company personnel including seasonal teams, sub-contractors and visitors during any gardening project contracted to the company.
Scope, responsibilities and risk management
This policy covers the full range of landscaping and garden care activities carried out by Blackfriars gardener teams and our gardening company operations. It sets expectations for risk assessment, safe systems of work, competency, personal protective equipment (PPE) and equipment maintenance. The aim is to reduce incidents, protect health and deliver reliable garden maintenance in Blackfriars and surrounding service areas.
Responsibilities are shared: senior management provides leadership and resources; supervisors ensure safe systems are followed on the ground; and all staff must work safely and report hazards. The emphasis is on prevention through planning, competent people and clear communication. Regular briefings, toolbox talks and recorded checks form part of our on-site routine.
Key operational controls include method statements for higher risk tasks, documented site-specific risk assessments, and a permit-to-work approach for activities with elevated hazard potential. We ensure equipment such as mowers, chainsaws and power tools are inspected, maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer guidance and the company’s safe operating procedures.
Training, competence and personal protection
Training is fundamental. All new recruits receive induction covering the policy, emergency arrangements and PPE use. Ongoing training includes manual handling techniques, tool-specific instruction, safe chemical handling where necessary and refresher courses for high-risk tasks. Competence is assessed and recorded. We use a mix of practical training, on-site mentoring and written briefings to ensure the Blackfriars gardener teams have the skills needed for safe performance.
Personal protective equipment is provided where residual risks remain after controls: high-visibility clothing, cut-resistant gloves, hearing protection, eye protection and appropriate footwear. PPE is not a substitute for safe systems; it complements task planning and safer equipment choices. Staff are responsible for storing, reporting faults and wearing issued PPE as instructed.
Working with contractors follows clear arrangements: contract bodies must demonstrate competency, provide risk assessments and cooperate with on-site rules. We check insurance and qualifications where applicable, and coordinate activities to avoid conflicts or overlapping hazards when more than one team is on site.
Incident reporting and emergency procedures — All incidents, near misses and hazardous conditions must be reported promptly so we can investigate and prevent recurrence. Emergency arrangements include first aid provision, clear access routes for emergency services and training for fire and first response. We maintain records of incidents, corrective actions and lessons learned to drive continuous improvement.
Monitoring and review — Performance is monitored through routine site checks, periodic audits and management reviews. We set measurable objectives for reducing accidents and improving compliance with safe work practices. The policy is reviewed at least annually and updated whenever operational changes, new equipment or lessons from incidents indicate it is necessary.
Commitment: Gardener Blackfriars believes that health and safety management is integral to providing high quality gardening services. By embedding safety in planning, training and supervision, our Blackfriars gardener teams deliver work efficiently while protecting people and the environment. This policy is endorsed by management and applies across all our gardening operations.
